A child has been left with critical injuries after falling from the rear door of a school bus in New York.

On Wednesday, Jan. 14, the eight-year-old was a passenger on a moving vehicle when they accidentally activated the rear door release in Rockland County, Ramapo Police Department told ABC7.

Despite the child falling onto the road, they were not hit by any vehicles as the car behind was able to stop, per the outlet.

Ramapo Police Department told ABC7 that they responded to a report of an unconscious pedestrian near 70 Main St. in Monsey at around 5 p.m.

The child was taken to Westchester County Medical Center and is currently being treated.

PEOPLE has contacted the Town of Ramapo Police Department and Westchester County Medical Center for comment, but did not immediately receive responses.

The school student was described as being in a "critical" condition, according to local news outlet Rockland Daily.

Police officers, an ambulance and members of the community were also pictured at the scene, per pictures shared by the outlet.

This news comes after PEOPLE reported in December that a 5-year-old boy in Maine died after being dragged by a school bus when his hand became stuck in the door.

On Jan. 9, a report by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed that  Simon Gonzalez’s left hand became stuck after he approached the bus while the doors were closing.

“The student extended his left arm into the bus, between the closing doors, and his arm became pinned between the doors as they closed,” the NTSB said. “The bus began to drive south on Route 35, and the student was dragged about 280 feet before he became dislodged from the door, fell to the roadway, and was run over by the bus.”
