Nicole Richie Seemingly Reacts to Hilary Duff’s New Song Amid Joel Madden Rumors
Hilary Duff is letting the rain fall down on her most intimate thoughts.
The Lizzie McGuire alum released “Roommates,” the second single from her upcoming album Luck…or Something, on Jan. 16, a wispy track that sees her craving the lost, erotic spark in a relationship.
“‘Roommates’ is a song about when life is life-ing, babe,” Hilary explained in her Jan. 15 Instagram post. “It’s that ache for a wilder, freer time—before the days were swallowed by carpools, budget talks, grocery runs and letting old or new insecurities slip in. It’s the restless hum of wanting to find your way back—to your rhythm, to your person, to yourself.”
Indeed, the 38-year-old—alongside her co-writers Brian Phillips and husband Matthew Koma—tries to find that spontaneous connection in both the song and its accompanying music video. However, it seems her partner would rather sit in this lull phase of their romance.
That realization comes alive in the opener, where Hilary admits that bringing up this issue would do more harm than good.
“I can barely mention it without causing some ego trauma / But I know you’re sensing how I’m tryna give you hints,” she sings. “Physical affection goes a long way with me, I don’t wanna / Quietly resent you, I just want the easy fix.”
Still leading with honesty, the Younger actor boldly reminisces on some blush-worthy memories from her relationship.
“I only want the beginning, I don’t want the end / I want the part where you say goddamn,” she coos in the chorus. “Back of a dive bar / Giving you head / Then sneak home late / Wake up your roommates / I want the highlights, ten out of ten / The butterflies from holding your hand.”
But as seen in the music video—which features Hilary desperately chasing her partner as it starts to rain—the only way she’ll find that excitement is if she leaves the relationship behind, and she ultimately does.
“Roommates” comes nearly two months after she turned heads with her album’s lead single “Mature.” The pop-synth hit sparked rumors she was reflecting on her past romance with Joel Madden and their nine-year age gap, but her husband had his own theory as to who she used as her muse.
“I think it could be about Bernie Sanders,” Matthew joked in a joint Apple Music 1 interview with Hilary in December, noting he feels “less threatened” by the 84-year-old politician than other possible men fans have suggested. “I have a few of my own.”

And while the couple—who shares kids Banks, 10, Mae, 4, and 20-month-old Townes, as well as her son Luca, 13, with ex Mike Comrie—didn’t confirm who inspired the track’s theme, Hilary has credited her husband for her decision to return to music.
"Living with the person that I live with, who's my husband, and just being 10 years removed from music and being 38 and just arriving kind of where I am in my life,” she explained on the Nov. 5 episode of Jake Shane's Therapuss podcast, “I just felt like I can finally fill in the blanks.”
