A couple who lost their home — and wedding rings — in the Los Angeles fires last year are celebrating their marriage.
Hipolito Cisneros re-proposed to his wife Liz, with a new wedding ring that included a diamond salvaged from her original ring that was melted in the Los Angeles fires in January 2024, according to KABC.
He said that thanks to a good Samaritan who helped them dig through the rubble, they were able to find “half our melted wedding rings.” Once they were found, he immediately jumped into action and began putting money aside not just for their new home in Altadena, but for a new ring to surprise her with.
“I saw her face when we found the rings it’s something that I didn’t want to see,” Hipolito shared.
"From that point on, I knew I had to put money aside a little bit from (rebuilding) the home and I was able to do it," he added.
He proposed at Universal Studios Hollywood with a new ring that was just as special. He could be seen getting down on one knee in a video obtained by KABC in front of what appeared to be The Grinch. She could be seen looking shocked before finally saying yes.
“Way back when he proposed to me, actually he didn’t bend the knee the first time so this was the first time bending the knee,” Liz told the outlet.
Her new sparkler features three diamonds, one to represent each of their children. They also hope to renew their vows in their new home as a symbol of their family rebuilding.
"We're going to remarry each other, can't wait for that," Liz told KABC, to which Hipoloto added, “I feel after the fire, after everything we’ve been through coming back to the original place that started our family. It’s just something that we have to do.”

The couple said they were making progress with rebuilding their home and replacing their family car, which Hipolito said he wanted to “pass” down to his son if he wanted it. As for what’s next, the couple said they are continuing to keep up the message of hope.
"Keep going, we know it's a big hurdle we have to go through. Just lean on each other. Lean on your community. Reach out to each other. We will get there. We will eventually get there," Hipolito said.
"We take advantage of every glimmer of hope we can get," he said.
